「Part Lies,Part Heart,Part Truth,Part Garbage 1982-2011/R.E.M.」を聴いた

　惜しまれつつも、去年2011/9/21に解散を発表したR.E.M.。あれからもう1年が過ぎた。そんな彼らの31年のキャリアを総括したGreatest Album「Part Lies,Part Heart,Part Truth,Part Garbage 1982-2011」(2012/Album)。ずっとダラダラ聴いてきたんで、そろそろ書いてみる。
　これ、1982～1987年のIRS時代、1988～2011年のWaner時代の双方の楽曲を集めたBest盤。彼らの足跡がじっくりとわかる。で、自分がリアルタイムでR.E.M.を聴き出したのは、1988年の「GREEN」から。「Stand」という曲が好きになり、生まれた初めて行ったNYCのタワレコで、CDプレイヤーも持っていないのに買った1枚。それからほぼ25年間、Waner時代のAlbumは全部買って聴いてきた。やっぱり感慨深い。
　で、ひっかかった曲について書いてみる。まずは=Disc 1=から。
　M-01「Gardening at Night」(Collage ChartにSmash HitしそうなPOPさ)、M-02「Radio Free Europe」(奇妙なBメロがいい)、M-03「Talk About the Passion」(タメが深い)、M-04「Sitting Still」(これもPOP)、M-07「Driver 8」(豊かなMelody。この曲は特にいい)、M-09「Begin the Begin」(鋭角でedgeが利きまくってる。この曲もいい)、M-10「Fall on Me」(これも芳醇)、M-11「Finest Worksong」(しなやかMelodyがかっこいい)、M-12「It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)」(言いまくり、込めまくるということ)、M-13「The One I Love」(これも豊か)、M-14「Stand」(この曲から好きになったR.E.M.。カラフルさにやられた)、M-15「Pop Song 89」(この曲も超有名。重さとPOPさの両立)、M-16「Get Up」(乾いたコーラスがいい)、M-17「Orange Crush」(いい意味で派手)、M-18「Losing My Religion」(切ないアコギが染みる)。M-19「Country Feedback」(重めで深遠)。M-20「Shiny Happy People」(これも名曲。まさにR.E.M.らしい鉄板なMelody Line)。
　続いて、=Disc 2=へ。
　M-01「Everybody Hurts」(歌い上げるBallad)。M-02「Man on the Moon」(美しいMelodyがいい)。M-03「Nightswimming」(これも綺麗。それにしてもこの3曲のつなぎは素晴らしい)。M-04「What's the Frequency, Kenneth?」(歪んだGuitarとそのリフがいい)。M-05「New Test Leper」(ザクザクしてるけど、丁寧)。M-08「The Great Beyond」(幻想的だけど力強い)。M-09「Imitation of Life」(この起伏がR.E.M.の真骨頂)。M-10「Bad Day」(強さが鉄板)。M-12「Living Well Is the Best Revenge」(Edgeが効いたRock'n Roll)。M-13「Supernatural Superserious」(これぞGuitar Popな音)。M-14「Uberlin」(MellowなMelodyもいい)。M-15「Oh My Heart」(これもマイナーで深い)。M-16「Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter」(硬質なRock Tune)。M-17「A Month of Saturdays」(Jacknife LeeのProduce。R.E.M.のこと、よくわかってるなって思った)。M-19「Hallelujah」(タメも深く、味わいも深い)。
　ほんと聴き応えたっぷりの2枚組Best盤。ほぼ年代順に追うことで、進化をしつつ、R.E.M.らしい独特の世界観をずっと貫いてきたBandだったことを再認識。やっぱり解散は残念だった。いつか復活することを願うのみ。
